After an examination of a body found in the Mississippi River near Shelby on Monday, Bolivar County authorities have more information about the individual but still no identification.

The Bolivar County authorities received a preliminary report today from the Bolivar County Coroner's Office and the MS State Medical Examiner's Office that the unidentified black male had a large tattoo that spelled out "Faith" on his upper back.

He also had a black hoop earring in his left ear and one black and blue Nike gym shoe and a pair of US Polo socks.

The incident report said the sheriff's department received a report of a body in the river near Shelby around 6 p.m.

"Gordon Moore reported that he was fishing with his wife in the Mississippi River near Shelby when they saw what they believed to be a dead body floating in the river. EOC and BCSO investigators responded to the scene and were able to recover the body from the river."

The incident report also said, "Deputy Coroner Murray Roark was also on the scene and took possession of the cadaver at 20:20 hours (8:20 p.m.). The body appeared to have been a black male of undetermined age, possibly between 35-50 years of age. The body may have been in the water for a couple of weeks or longer. Law enforcement agencies upriver will be contacted to see if they have any missing persons who might be this unknown male."

"There was no identification on him. We turned the body over to the coroner's office and we're seeking help from surrounding counties in the areas to identify him. We have no missing persons report in Bolivar County so if anyone in the surrounding areas has a missing persons report we are seeking help," said Sheriff Kelvin Williams.

"Two boats went out to retrieve the body. We brought it back in to the coroner," said Brad Barr, the unit chief for EOC.

The Bolivar County Sheriff's Department, the EOC, Delta K-9, and the county coroner responded to the call.
