The Shaw Fire Academy for Kids educates kids, ages 5-13, about fire safety and prevention, as well as facts about fires.
“It’s a good program,” Boone said. “We came up with the idea about 10-12 years ago.”
Boone said she typically has at least 50 kids sign up for the camp.
The five-day program, which includes breakfast and lunch, runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 21-25.
Boone said all volunteers that participate in instructing the children are certified.
On the first day, campers are introduced to the life of a firefighter. They also learn about school bus, bicycle and car seat safety, as well as disaster plans and home hazards.
On day two, the campers learn about kitchen fires and home escape plans — stop, drop and roll. They learn about fire extinguishers, first aid for burns, proper use of power cords, smoke alarms and rope and knot techniques.
July 23 is Wet and Wild Day when the kids get a tour of the fire truck and equipment, such as hoses, hydrant, tools and ladders. Boone said “Wet and Wild” Day is always held on a Wednesday.
July 24 is Fun Day and Boone said the kids go on an educational trip for Fun Day, and this year, the kids will travel to Washington, D.C., for their trip.
Graduation is held at 6 p.m. July 25 at the Culture Center in Shaw. On graduation, Boone said they would honor the volunteers and give the kids their certificates.
Kevin Carson will be this year’s scholarship recipient of the program. The scholarship he was awarded is the Bernice Carson Boone Shaw Fire Academy for Kids Scholarship, which is funded by Boone.
Boone said Carson is the first student to have stayed with the program for 10 years, since it began.
The Fire Academy Ball that is scheduled to take place on June 14, is still pending, Boone said. Boone said she hasn’t quite gotten enough participants, yet.
But fire safety is not the only preventive measure Boone tries to teach kids.
“I try to cover things I know kids will be faced with,” Boone said. “I try to instill with them these are the ‘do’s and don’ts.’”
