Man dies from car accident

Mississippi Highway Patrolmen, along with Bolivar County Deputies and Rescue officials, were dispatched to an accident on U.S. Highway 61 at 4:40 p.m. in Renova on Sunday.

According to a report by Tony Dunn, public affairs officer for the Mississippi Highway Patrol, vehicle one, a 2005 Lexus whose driver was 60 year-old Donald R. West from Kalamazoo, Mich., was stopped on the northbound shoulder of U.S. 61.

West was standing near the driver rear door of his vehicle when a 2009 GMC Denali driven by 50 year-old Otis G. Poole from Lyon, also traveling north, traveled to the right shoulder colliding with the rear area of the Lexus and West.

West died from injuries he sustained in the accident.

Poole was not injured.

Passengers in West's vehicle included Richer Matthews, 61, who was taken by Pafford EMS to Bolivar Medical Center for observation; children Davari Jackson West, 6, Quavion Lampkins, 2, and Miracle West, 3, who were not injured.

All were wearing their seatbelts.

The accident is still under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

In an unrelated accident, Highway Patrol responded to a one-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 49 in Doddsville at 3:10 p.m. Sunday.

A Dodge Challenger driven by 20-year-old, Rob Ashcraft from Hampton, Ga., was traveling north when he lost control of his vehicle and traveled to the east or right shoulder where he overturned several times.

As a result Ashcraft was ejected from his vehicle into a nearby field.

He was airlifted by MedStat Air EMS to The University Medical Center with possible life threatening injuries.

"When we arrived on the scene, the gentleman was walking around as though nothing had happened," said Anthony Dunn Public Affairs Officer for Mississippi Highway Patrol

No report on his condition as been obtained at this time.  

The accident is still under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
